A role (sometimes spelled rôle) or a social role is a set of connected behaviors, rights and obligations as conceptualized by actors in a social situation. It is mostly defined as an expected behavior in a given individual social status and social position.
The term is used in two rather different but related senses. It is vital to both functionalist and interactionist understandings of society, but is of only peripheral relevance to conflict theory.
The term role model was introduced by Robert K. Merton. Merton says that individuals compare themselves with "reference groups" full of people who occupy the social role to which the individual aspires. The term has passed into general use to mean any "person who serves as an example of a positive behavior".
